To prevent the electrolysis from generating corrosion processes that would deteriorate the installation, it is recommended to install a sacrificial anode in the water tank, which will be replaced when it has disappeared.
The anode is usually made of magnesium and protects the more electronegative metal (steel) from this type of corrosion, i.e. the metal that is more susceptible to corrosion by galvanic couple in the presence of a less electronegative metal (copper) with which it is forming a ‘galvanic pile’.
The anode is always more electronegative, and therefore more susceptible to corrosion and oxidation, than the metal it protects.
